Blue ray player upscale to 1080i?
Jason A asked:
Can a blue ray player upscale regular dvd’s to 1080i? Is this possible? Will it play blue ray discs at 1080i?
I have an old pioneer elite tv that only accepts component video inputs. The best it will display is either 480p or 1080i.

Will I be able to hook up a blue ray player via component cables and watch dvd’s in 1080i?
thanks.
Isnt 1080p the highest quality ? I dont have an HDMI connection, only component cable input. The highest my TV will display is 1080i.
Will blue ray players output 1080i into component video outputs?

Blue Ray players can not convert regular DVDs to 1080i resolution. Only blue ray discs can play 1080i picture on a HDTV that supports up to 1080i…
You would need to use a DVI cable or an HDMI cable to fully get the 1080i resolution. Component cables will only give you 1080p (still high def, but not as good, but trust me, u probably wont even notice a difference)
1080p is the best you can get not 1080i but you will only get 1080p on a 1080p TV.
I think the DVD upscaling limit depends on the model, but Blurays will play at 1080i. It’s the same as 1080p, just interlaced.
You can still hook up the bluray player through component. No need for HDMI. HDMI just supports some DRM-type stuff. You do need HDMI, or an HDMI receiver to do the full 7.1 though. Optical cables will only give you 5.1, because of bandwidth limits.
Component and HDMI both show 1080p, if the device does not limit what is broadcast over component (thus trying to force you to use the DRM stuff). You basically want a thick, well shielded component cable, since that will transmit the signal the best (component is analogue, so the signal can be distorted by nearby interference, such as power cables if the cable build quality is bad).
If you need good cables, check out
