Can I get a clear picture on a HD tv with a digital cable signal?
I want to buy a flat screen HD TV, but I don’t have a HD source so the screen is very grainy. Is there a converter that can make a digital signal mimic a HD signal. I do not want to have a grainy picture, but I also don’t want to spend $70 a month on HD service when my HOA fees include free cable.

Check your connections. The HD tv should show the regular digital picture just fine.
Yes you can. The pictures aren’t as good as Hi-Def but they are decent and they are clear. I have satellite where all channels are digital and the pictures from Dish are very good. They do depend on the quality of the network that originates them. The pictures from the premium channels like HBO, ENCORE, ect are very good, The ones from the cheaper networks are not so good sometimes (grainy). All look fine on a 50″ plasma though.
There are no converters to improve the picture really. These are more gimick than anything else. An upconverting DVD/VCR unit may help but I doubt it. One thing is to make sure you have good connections to the TV. Use at least S-VHS connections. Component video is better yet but I doubt a cable box has it (and it wouldn’t really matter at the standard resolutions anyhow, S-VHS already exceeds the need). If neither of these are available then use the old A/V connectors. Do not use the CH 3/4 RF … this will be a bad picture no matter what.
